Dubai introduces one-time biometric check-in for hotels and holiday homes
New biometric system enables faster arrivals for millions of international visitors
DUBAI – His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has announced the citywide introduction of a one-time contactless hotel guest check-in system.
Designed to transform the arrival experience for visitors, the new service removes the need for in-person check-in at participating hotels and holiday homes. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to advance the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which seeks to reinforce Dubai’s standing as a leading global destination for business and leisure.
Developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in collaboration with several independent providers, the biometric and digital capability is now available for immediate integration across the hospitality sector. The rollout highlights Dubai’s focus on advanced technology, guest satisfaction, and operational efficiency while supporting the emirate’s wider digital transformation agenda.
Digital upgrade
The system allows hotel guests to complete all necessary formalities before travelling, directly through their mobile phones. By uploading identification documents and biometric data only once, visitors can significantly reduce or even eliminate traditional check-in times. Upon arrival at participating hotels, guests may proceed directly to their rooms or to the next stage of their stay without presenting documents at the reception desk.
The securely stored data remains valid until the user’s identification document expires. For future visits, only a brief authentication step such as facial recognition is required, enabling quicker access with each stay. With repeat visitors representing almost a quarter of Dubai’s total annual arrivals, the new system offers a notable upgrade to the experience of travellers who return frequently.
Leadership Vision
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan said, “Guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, our city continues to lead the way in embracing innovation and creating unparalleled experiences. By leveraging cutting-edge solutions, we are not only enhancing the visitor journey, but also strategically positioning Dubai for sustained tourism growth. Aligning perfectly with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, the rollout of this technology is a testament to our vision for a smart, seamless, and secure urban environment and reflects our commitment to further consolidating Dubai's position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.”
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of DET, added that the new service marks an important milestone for Dubai’s hospitality sector. He said the development demonstrates ongoing progress toward the D33 agenda and showcases the value of collaboration between public and private entities in the emirate. He noted that the city continues to identify fresh opportunities to strengthen the tourism ecosystem and enhance its contribution to Dubai’s economy.
Wider integration
The contactless check-in solution is designed for smooth integration into hotel applications and web platforms. Its flexible structure allows developers and hotel operators to adopt the technology within existing systems without major adjustments. Beyond hotel check-ins, the system may eventually be applied across other visitor touchpoints, including car rentals, creating a more unified experience for travellers.
The initiative complements several smart services already in place across Dubai. These include the smart tunnels at Dubai International Airport, which have reduced processing times at passport control to just seconds, offering one of the fastest border clearance experiences in the world.
Tourism growth
Dubai’s hospitality infrastructure remains central to its global appeal. The city currently offers accommodation across 820 hotels and hotel apartments, covering a wide range of categories and service levels. Supporting the emirate’s broader tourism strategy, these establishments collectively contribute to Dubai’s status as one of the world’s most visited destinations.
The first ten months of 2025 saw Dubai welcome 15.70 million international overnight visitors, an increase of 5 per cent year on year. During the same period, guests spent 36.71 million room nights across hotels in the city. The new technology is expected to support further growth by enhancing efficiency, easing arrival procedures, and meeting the expectations of increasingly tech-savvy travellers.
